The first Punjabi Dhaba was presumably settled not long after the connecting of the urban communities of India by expressways (national, state and town streets).

Dhaba’s were portrayed by mud structures and bunks to sit upon (charpai/moda) while eating. A wooden board would be put over the width of the bunk on which to place the dishes. With time, the beds were supplanted by tables. The food is normally economical and has a 'homemade' feel to it.
